Mission:
The mission of the clinical division of General Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center/Private Diagnostics Clinics is to provide quality care for our patients with a focus on patient satisfaction and innovative customer service, and to promote the education and development of faculty and resident physicians through ongoing graduate and continuing medical education.
The clinical division of General Internal Medicine addresses the acute, chronic and preventive care of adults age 17 and older living within the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) area of North Carolina. The Private Diagnostic Clinical Practices of Duke General Internal Medicine are located in Durham, North Carolina at the Duke Health Center at Pickett Road and the Duke Health Center at Southpoint. Our team of health care providers consists of 12 faculty physicians, 35 Internal Medicine resident physicians, one Adult Nurse Practitioner specializing in mental health management, one clinical pharmacist practitioner, and two certified diabetes educators, all supported by our nursing, clerical and customer service teams. Our clinical practices focus on delivering excellent care to all of our patients, and our physicians have received national recognition as quality providers in managing diabetes and heart disease by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). As part of the division’s ongoing focus on measuring the quality of care that we provide to our patients, the clinical practices are participating in the Duke Prospective Health quality initiative supported by Duke University Human Resources and PrimaHealth IPA, and are participating with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in the Bridges to Excellence quality improvement project.
Our physician faculty members are actively engaged within the Duke University Health System through many different committee assignments, and have ongoing relationships with Duke Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital, Select Specialty Hospital, Duke University School of Medicine, Duke Center for Integrative Medicine and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Faculty physicians in the clinical division of general internal medicine participate in clinical research trials as investigators in collaboration with the Duke Primary Care Research Consortium (PCRC). Faculty members are currently participating as investigators in studies relating to diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and physician-patient communication.
Also, our physician faculty act as teachers and mentors to learners within the Duke system, which include internal medicine resident physicians, students in the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing, and students participating in the Duke Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner training programs. The clinical division also participates as a practice site for the Duke Hospital Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency program as well as for pharmacy students from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy.
